Nestle drops plan to take water from Spring Township

Nestle Waters has decided not to pursue its proposed project to source water from Spring Township Water Authority Well 2, but Centre County remains a leading candidate in its search for a third Pennsylvania bottling location.

In January, Nestle Waters identified Centre County as a potential location for its third Pennsylvania bottling facility, which would create an estimated 50 manufacturing jobs.

What Nestle’s April 16 announcement to move away from the Spring Township water source ultimately means for the future of the project remains to be seen.

The Chamber of Business & Industry of Centre County said in a statement that it appreciates Nestle’s commitment to transparency in announcing its intentions early in the process and to thoroughly conducting due diligence as promised.

Nestle’s future considerations of doing business in this area are dependent on many factors subject to evaluation, the statement said.

Meanwhile, officials at Food & Water Watch were pleased with the decision.

“The overwhelming community opposition to Nestle’s Spring Creek scheme sent the company a clear message: Our water is not yours for the taking. This is great news for maintaining the health and vitality of the Spring Creek Watershed, but Nestle still has its sights set on a major extraction project in Centre County,” Pennsylvania Director Sam Bernhardt said in a statement.
